REAL engages with policymakers, regulators, and consumer advocates across the country to expand and protect retail energy choice. We educate decision-makers, build coalitions, and empower consumers with the information they need to make informed energy choices. Position Description REAL is seeking a highly motivated, strategic, and entrepreneurial professional to lead legislative and political engagement across multiple priority states. The Director will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with legislative and regulatory decision-makers, designing and executing state-level strategies, and coordinating with member companies and coalition partners to achieve policy outcomes. This role will play a central part in advancing REAL’s priorities: expanding access to competitive energy markets for large commercial and industrial customers and modernizing existing retail energy frameworks to strengthen consumer choice and ensure market integrity. Responsibilities Develop and implement legislative and regulatory strategies in multiple states to advance market expansion and modernization priorities. Build and maintain strong relationships with policymakers, regulators, staff, and stakeholders. Manage state lobbyist relationships and oversee their participation in strategy and execution. Organize opportunities for member company engagement with decision-makers, including lobby days, briefings, hearings, and coalition events. Draft and deliver advocacy materials including testimony, comment filings, fact sheets, presentations, and talking points. Develop and maintain productive working relationships with allies, consumer advocates, and other industry associations. Collaborate with REAL’s communications team to identify opportunities for earned media, op-eds, and other public-facing advocacy. Support grassroots and grasstops mobilization strategies where aligned with policy goals. Travel occasionally (up to 30%) for legislative sessions, advocacy days, coalition meetings, and member engagement. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, economics, or related field; advanced degree a plus. 5–8 years of professional experience in legislative policy development, regulatory engagement, campaigns, or issue advocacy; experience in the energy sector strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to design and execute policy strategies across multiple states. Strong interpersonal skills, with a track record of coalition-building and relationship management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to craft persuasive advocacy materials. Entrepreneurial mindset, with comfort operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. High degree of initiative, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Commitment to advancing competitive markets and protecting consumer choice. Willingness to travel as needed.
