Job Summary

Allied Steel Buildings is seeking an experienced Detailing Manager to lead our global detailing operations for pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB) and structural steel projects. This role oversees the full construction detailing lifecycle, including primary structure, secondary structure, and sheeting & trim packages while ensuring accurate detailing checking and quality control processes.

The Detailing Manager will supervise teams of detailers and detailer checkers, ensuring all detailing and construction detailing deliverables meet strict quality, fabrication, and project deadlines. This leadership role requires deep experience in steel detailing, construction detailing, and detailing checking procedures for complex building systems.

Using Tekla Structures and BIM workflows, the Detailing Manager ensures precise modeling, efficient fabrication data transfer, and seamless coordination between engineering design and manufacturing teams. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the accuracy of detailing packages, overseeing detailer checker reviews, and ensuring high-quality construction detailing outputs for fabrication and erection.

Key Responsibilities

1. Department Leadership & Management

  • Lead and manage a global team of detailers and detailer checkers, ensuring high-quality detailing and construction detailing standards across all projects.

  • Oversee scheduling, workload distribution, and performance management within the detailing department.

  • Ensure timely delivery of complete detailing packages, including shop drawings, anchor bolt plans, erection drawings, and fabrication documents.

  • Implement and maintain detailing checking procedures to improve quality control and reduce fabrication errors.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen construction detailing processes aligned with ISO 9001 standards.

  • Conduct root-cause analysis on detailing errors identified through detailer checker reviews and implement corrective actions.

2. Technical Execution (BIM & Tekla)

  • Serve as the technical authority for Tekla Structures, ensuring consistent standards for modeling and construction detailing outputs.

  • Oversee the development of accurate detailing models and fabrication drawings for primary steel, secondary steel, and sheeting & trim systems.

  • Ensure effective detailing checking workflows to validate models, shop drawings, and bill of materials prior to fabrication.

  • Manage integration between Tekla Structures and Strumis, ensuring accurate BOM generation and CNC data transfer for fabrication.

  • Support the detailer checker team in reviewing models, drawings, and fabrication documentation.

3. Coordination & Fabrication Support

  • Collaborate with structural engineers to resolve design conflicts and constructability issues identified during detailing.

  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure construction detailing outputs align with shop capabilities and production constraints.

  • Maintain a strong presence on the shop floor to resolve detailing and fabrication questions quickly and efficiently.

  • Coordinate with project managers and customers regarding RFIs, revisions, and detailing clarifications throughout the project lifecycle.

Requirements

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical field, or equivalent experience in steel detailing or construction detailing.

  • Experience:

    • 15+ years of experience in steel detailing or construction detailing, preferably within the PEMB industry.

    • Proven experience leading teams of detailers and detailer checkers.

    • Extensive experience performing and managing detailing checking and QA/QC processes for structural steel projects.

  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Tekla Structures – Advanced or Expert level (API experience is a plus).

    • Strong experience with Strumis fabrication management systems.

    • Knowledge of BIM workflows, IFC data exchange, and digital construction detailing systems.

    • Deep understanding of primary steel, secondary steel, and sheeting & trim detailing practices.

  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of Metal Building Systems (PEMB), AISC standards, and steel fabrication processes.

  • Core Competencies:

    • Strong expertise in detailing checking, detailer checker workflows, and construction detailing standards.

    • Excellent problem-solving skills related to fabrication challenges caused by detailing outputs.

    • Strong leadership abilities to mentor and develop detailing professionals and detailer checkers.

  • Languages: Fluency in English; Spanish bilingual skills are highly valued.

  • Travel: Ability to travel 30–40% internationally between detailing offices in the USA, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Spain.

Preferred Experience

  • Certifications (preferred, but not required):

    • NISD (National Institute of Steel Detailing) Certification (Class 1 or 2).

    • Tekla Certified Professional .

  • Experience working within ISO 9001 quality management systems related to detailing processes.

  • Strong background in pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) detailing and construction detailing.

  • Proven experience detailing complex projects involving sheeting & trim systems, including roofing panels, wall panels, flashing, and gutters.

  • Experience resolving fabrication issues related to detailing errors or detailing checking processes.

  • Previous experience working with offshore detailing teams or remote detailer checker coordination.
