Clinical Investigator

The Clinical Investigator - as the Project's Principal Investigator (PI) - is primarily responsible for the following, funded prospective observational research study evaluating renal involvement and neuronal injury risk in patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with moderate to severe hyponatremia (serum Na <125 mmol/L). The project investigates whether early nephrology consultation within the first 24 hours reduces overly rapid sodium correction and potential neurologic injury. Neuronal injury will be assessed using Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE-??) levels measured at admission and at 24 hours. The study is a 2-year, single-center cohort study at Westchester Medical Center with an estimated enrollment of 200 adult ED patients. Data will be collected from the electronic medical record, laboratory testing, and clinical management timelines.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Investigator serving as PI shall:

• Oversee the overall study design and implementation.
• Direct coordination between ED, nephrology, and research teams.
• Ensure adherence to IRB protocol and clinical guidelines.
• Supervise nephrology fellow participation and workflow.
• Monitor nephrology consultation processes for eligible hyponatremia patients.
• Oversee data collection including:
• Admission labs and sodium trends.
• NSE-?? testing.
• Timing of nephrology consultation.
• Treatment interventions and outcomes.
• Ensure accuracy and integrity of chart abstraction and data entry.
• Review and validate collected datasets from the electronic medical record.
• Guide statistical methodology and interpretation.
• Supervise comparison with prior hyponatremia cohort.
• Oversee logistic regression and statistical testing processes.
• Lead manuscript development and publication.
• Prepare abstracts, presentations, and research dissemination.
• Coordinate collaboration among investigators and institutional stakeholders.
• Ensure protocol compliance and documentation.
• Maintain research timelines and project milestones.
• Coordinate with laboratory team and manage lab test workflow (e.g. NSE-?? testing).

Qualifications

Education/Experience

• MD or DO with board certification or board eligibility in Nephrology, Emergency Medicine, or related field
• Fellowship training in Nephrology (preferred)
• Prior experience as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in clinical research

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Strong knowledge of electrolyte disorders, particularly hyponatremia
• Familiarity with IRB processes, regulatory compliance, and human subjects research protections
• Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) data extraction and chart review
